Maybe I Can Love My Neighbor Too by Jennifer Grant is available today!
I love reviewing books that teach our kids how to be kind. Don’t we all want that for our kids? Sometimes children might hear about loving our neighbor as ourselves and get the idea but wonder how. Or they’re read the story of the good Samaritan and understand that we’re to love our neighbor but lack some concrete examples of how to do that.
In this picture book, illustrated by Benjamin Schipperand published by Beaming Books, a young girl observes small acts of kindness between others. She decides that she wants to love her neighbors in the same ways.
I love the specific ideas in this book that young children can relate to. The ideas aren’t out of reach of small children (with some parent participation). It teaches kids to empathize with others. I also love the variety of ethnicities that are portrayed in this book.
Jennifer Grant is also a mom who created her family both by birth and by international adoption, which bonds my heart to hers.
Here’s a picture of sweet Jennifer. She says this about her book, “There are several examples of ways we can love our neighbors in the book, including giving money to people in need, sharing toys or food, and simply noticing the needs of people around us. We all want to raise kind and courteous children and so many of us long for a more civil, loving world. By modeling loving acts for our kids and talking about what it means to love, we can raise a generation of good neighbors and make the world a better place.”
The publisher, Beaming Books, also created an activity pack of resources for parents, teachers, and librarians to use with the book for teaching. You can find them HERE.
