Make Memories with a Solar Eclipse Party on August 21st! Part 1: Glasses, Invites, and Make a Pinhole Projector!

Plan a Solar Eclipse 2017 Party!

The First Solar Eclipse to Sweep Across the Entire US Since 1918 is Happening on August 21st, 2017!

I love to find ways to make special days memorable. And when the unexpected happens, I love to learn and use it as a teaching and memory-making moment.

So, even if we’re not in the “path of totality” where the sun will be completely eclipsed by the moon, and though we may envy others who might even see stars come out while a glowing corona

surrounds the sun during this eclipse, we can still join in the fun, right?

We can still throw a party to mark this historic day!

Eye Protection

Whether planning a gathering for adults, families, or kids, if you want to see the eclipse, protecting everyone’s eyes needs to be a top priority.
A free way to watch the eclipse is to create a free pinhole projector to follow the shadow of the eclipse. This could even be a fun craft project for kids during the party.
Here’s a how-to guide to making a pinhole projector: https://www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/how-to-view-eclipse.
(Be sure to read the third paragraph on this site to remember how looking directly at the sun will literally burn your eyes.

But a newer option is to buy ISO Certified glasses to look directly at the eclipse to see the glowing corona while still protecting your eyes. In researching solar eclipse glasses, I found only a few companies selling glasses that meet the ISO Certification requirements for eye protection while directly viewing the eclipse.
To save you some time, here are a couple of ISO Certified sellers of Eclipse Glasses I found on Amazon:
